PORTABILITY

My life has dramatically changed in the last decade. If back in nineties I was mostly sitting in the lab, making tests and writing stuff, now I am moving a lot.

Travelling from one country to another I have found out something that I was not aware before. I am sure that most of you do not realize it. Not  before you face this problem. It is not really a problem, but rather a feature.  Here it is: Everyone is different. Every nation is unique. Every country has different interface of common things like Windows.

What do I mean? Let us take a keyboard as an example. In Italy you have different layout on a keyboard, In Germany letters ‘Y’ and ‘Z’ are switched, In Russia the keyboard is Cyrillic, In China the Pining plug-in does not allow to enter even the username. Do you know how to switch layout to standard English one? Alt-Shift is default one. But I have found out that in Russia they use another shortcut.

Another important point - portable applications. When sitting in the internet café somewhere in Helsinki, I am running my Skype, my Miranda, my Office and my other applications from my portable device. I use the computer engine, while all apps are running from the CodSafe. By the way, I do not need to enter password to open it, just fingerprint. If I need another application I go to the website of manufacturer and download all that I need directly to my device. There is a list of over 100 portable apps there.

Other not less important issues are security and privacy. I am not leaving a footprint on a computer I work. I am not afraid to lose the device; it is protected and will be totally destroyed after 8 failed attempts.

I am feeling free. I have all I need always with me. I am everywhere home.
What about you? Are you portable?

Please leave your comments here. I am keen to learn your ways.
